Smartsheet was selected as a 2024 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of diverse talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Multi-Faceted and Thoughtful Approach to University Recruitment
Smartsheet’s values drive their recruitment process. They partner with schools and organizations that serve diverse populations that align with the Smartsheet Way and their Employee Resource Groups. They tailor their recruitment efforts to align with the businesses early career hiring needs which supports conversions of interns to full-time employees. Smartsheet attends career fairs, on-campus and virtually, hosts employee panels, company information sessions, offers mock interviews and resume reviews, and manages their Summer Internship Program. Smartsheet hosted an event called “Smarter with Smartsheet: Navigating Job Applications, Interviews, Early Careers, and More!” with partner organization Edlyft. Edlyft supports historically underrepresented computer science students. They provided opportunities for their students to connect with employees to learn more about their careers and life at Smartsheet.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Smartsheet strives to create a culture of belonging that is rooted in respect and opportunity for all people. They believe that by celebrating diversity of voices and experiences and fostering equity for their team, customers, and communities, they enable people to do and be their best. Inspiring people to create meaningful change — from the inside out. Smartsheet’s University and Early Career teams work closely with the Talent Acquisition and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion teams to attract early career talent at large scale events like AfroTech, Out in Tech, and Latinas in Tech. They also partner with local nonprofit organizations including Ada Developers Academy and AppConnect NW, in WA State.
Impactful Internship Program
Smartsheet’s internship program is paid and fully remote. The University Programs team partners with intern hiring managers to ensure each internship position provides a project that can be completed in 12 weeks. The goal is to provide interns with an immersive experience of what it’s like to be a full-time employee at Smartsheet. This includes introducing interns to the platform via product training, learning about Employee Resource Groups, and company values. Interns are invited to virtual Ask Me Anything sessions with Executive Leaders, have the opportunity to join a session with Talent Acquisition, to review their resume, LinkedIn profile, and have a mock interview, and are connected with previous interns who are now full-time employees. Interns have a dedicated slack channel, receive branded swag, and are invited to a variety of virtual fun events.
