Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

Given the virtual nature of the last year, the recruiting team at LMI has been able to increase its reach to students and early career talent across the country. With location not being a barrier to join their programs, the team has held direct information sessions at universities that were widely attended as well as partnership with organization/societies for outreach. Alumni and active members of these schools and organizations were able to describe "Why LMI" and successfully increase the participants in all of the student programs. Finally, LMI was recently voted to the #1 spot on the Washington Post Top Workplaces list given its value to the early career population and DEI&A efforts.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

The early careers team at LMI values diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility at all levels including placing an emphasis on early career talent. The organization fosters a culture where workforce mobility is encouraged, and talent is developed from within. The student programs team has developed and executed a robust early career candidate experience that has produced current leaders in the organization today. This has been much more impactful during the pandemic where LMI has been able to retain and expand these programs while shifting to a virtual setting.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

The importance of DEI&A is reflected at LMI through affinity groups, partnerships, employee representation, and much more. The university recruitment team at LMI has echoed this by connecting and recruiting students from HBCUs, minority serving institutions, and HSIs. These partnerships have been formed over decades of collaboration, events, and sponsorships. Most recently, HBCU representation was reflected in recent LMI internship program which turned into full-time hires for the organization. The investment in recruiting diverse candidates at all levels (including entry level) is consistently part of the hiring process for this team.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

At LMI, the internship and student programs have set a foundation for early career talent development for almost 20 years. Interns get a chance to come in and experience life at LMI through meaningful projects that help solve the government's toughest challenges. In addition, interns are able to participate in periodic workshops and briefings from senior leaders across the organization. They are also able to network with each other through multiple formal and informal touchpoints throughout their time in the program. The collaboration and real-life experience of the program has attributed to an over 90% acceptance rate for full-time return offers.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

LMI has been able to build and foster a culture of developing from within. In FY20, LMI has investment for more than $1M in training and development for employees. This is a lucrative scenario where entry-level hires can come to a place that makes a difference for the government while being able to equip themselves with the skills to thrive in the workforce. Additionally, LMI provides mobility opportunities for rotational projects which give entry-level talent many opportunities for development. LMI has an early career professionals program that provides a network for entry-level talent to receive mentorship and guidance on navigating the workforce and organization.
