The Highlights of Epic's Approach to Early Career Hiring
Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
To fill Epic's high-volume entry-level needs, they need to utilize a variety of tools to increase students' awareness of opportunities. They meet with early career talent at career fairs (both in-person and virtually), employing a unique pre-event outreach strategy to let candidates know that they'll be attending and would like to meet them. Epic receives resume books from universities across the country and sends emails and follow-ups encouraging them to apply, as well as targeted messages through RippleMatch, LinkedIn, and Handshake. To further engage Gen Z, they've partnered with Audacy to advertise jobs across radio stations and podcasts, and they create TikToks about life at Epic, where their most viral video has over 750,000 views.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
Epic approaches creating a positive interview experience with an “all of the above” approach to ensure candidates are informed and welcomed, with clear expectations. 50% of their final interview process is dedicated to learning about Epic and the role they are considering. After that, candidates participate in a case study scenario designed to give them real-world examples of the types of projects or challenges they may encounter in their line of work. They finish with a brief meeting with their recruiter to discuss logistical items, next steps, etc. to ensure candidates leave with a clear picture of what to expect. After the hiring process is complete and an offer is extended, candidates are offered a fully-paid trip to Madison. Epic books the candidates’ travel and lodging arrangements, and reimburses other associated expenses. Candidates are often offered the opportunity to meet with a member of the team they will work with, either in-person or over the phone, to cover any further questions the candidate has.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Epic recruits talent with diverse ranges of backgrounds and experiences from all over the United States. Epic looks for staff who will support the equitable, inclusive, and welcoming work environment at Epic. Once a candidate accepts the offer, they network with other new staff who are starting around the same time as them to help them search for apartments and/or as roommates together. Everyone gets a mentor for their first full year. Epic has diversity-focused groups ranging from Muslim in Madison to Feminism to HOLA (Hispanic Outreach, Leadership & Advancement). There are also more formal Employee Resource Groups who meet on a regular basis, both to promote the well-being of Epic and to develop personal connections and affiliation for its members.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
At the intersection of medicine and computer science, there are countless opportunities to create something incredible. Epic tackles some of the most complex and challenging problems in software development —massive scalability, HCI, big data—while fundamentally transforming an industry that affects the quality of life for everyone. Epic interns join a small and collaborative team in a casual yet energetic atmosphere. They enjoy freedom and autonomy while working on their individual project but have plenty of guidance and advice along the way. Best of all, they have the chance to complete meaningful and substantive projects that are shaping the future of innovation at Epic. And at the end of the summer, interns share their project with Epic’s R&D leadership team and developers from across the company.
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
Epic hires bright, motivated individuals from all academic backgrounds. The robust new hire training program fosters the skills they need to be successful in the industry. Each new hire has a mentor, a team leader, and the opportunity to build community across roles, divisions, and tenures through things like Employee Resource Groups, Connectivities, and Brain Dates. There are a variety of leadership and professional growth paths available, with an emphasis on finding a path that allows candidates to focus on projects and skills that they enjoy. And they are compensated for doing good work through annual raises and end of year bonuses, plus the option to own Epic stock!
