Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Elevance Health believes DEI begins in the recruitment and branding process! To support DEI in their internship program, Elevance Health partnered with several D&I organizations, such as WayUp, Jopwell, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, to ensure they are developing a robust pipeline of top, diverse talent from HBCUs, HSIs, and MSIs. The Elevance Health University Recruiting & Relations time reports up through the DEI function. The team harnessed the critical work the DEI team has implemented across the organization and collaborated to integrate in the internship program in three key ways. Interns will have the opportunity to hear directly from the VP and Chief Diversity Officer and learn more about DEI initiatives during one of the Lunch & Learn activities. Additionally, the team worked diligently to ensure they secured a diverse group of leader speakers and event presenters from across all races, gender, generations, functions, and levels. Lastly, interns will have the opportunity to learn more about various Business Resources Groups.

Impactful Internship Program

The structure of the Elevance Health Enterprise Summer internship program is built upon the foundation of Elevance Health’s mission, vision, and values and is comprised of our program’s 4 pillars of success. These pillars are meaningful work experience, leadership exposure and networking, learning and development, and social and community engagement. Over the course of the 10-week internship program (6/5-8/11), the goal is to provide interns with a best-in-class experience. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful work experience, the first pillar, which includes their project work and day to day interaction with their team and other members and is designed to equip interns with the necessary real-world knowledge and skills to perform at a high level whether they are still finishing their degree or have recently graduated and are ready to enter the workforce. Each line of business within the organization will also provide their own functional specific programming and will ensure that all interns are receiving a consistent, immersive experience. Interns are provided with exposure to leadership and networking, the second pillar of success, through the Leadership Speaker Series. The leadership speaker series is designed to allow opportunities for the interns to connect with senior and executive leadership in-person and virtually and to foster an environment for mentorship. These opportunities enable interns to build their confidence, ask questions, and gain knowledge as it relates to healthcare, career development and leadership. The third pillar, learning and professional development, is designed to stimulate professional and personal growth, and will take form of virtual seminars/workshops and in-person sessions. Interns will receive professional development related to leadership and how to take ownership of their careers, personal branding and how to optimize LinkedIn and other social media platforms, and learn about their behavioral styles. Social and community engagement, the last pillar, is designed to give interns an opportunity to engage and connect with one another and with communities in efforts to better understand the approach to whole health, and how Elevance Health serves their communities and customers by fulfilling their purpose of improving the health of humanity. Interns will also have a chance to learn more about Elevance Health through the lens of diversity and inclusion and will hear from EBRGs to better understand what resources are available as a full-time associate, and how business resource groups support the value of diversity. Finally, During National Intern Day, interns will hear from the company President and CEO! Interns will also participate in an interactive game show style trivia activity, in partnership with the Impact for Good organization. Interns will compete on teams and winning teams will be awarded up to $1000 to donate an organization of their choice. interns will have the chance to hear from former interns/ recent grads who participated in the summer internship program and are now working at Elevance Health full time. These panelists will share their experiences and knowledge with the current class of 2023 interns. Finally, this year the team will also host two in-person events at the headquarters in Indianapolis, IN and at the second largest ‘Pulse Point’ in Atlanta! Designed to be immersive, informative, and interactive. The Intern Summit events will be the first in-person event executed to engage with interns post-Covid. Many interns will have the opportunity to fly to the headquarters/PulsePoints and immerse themselves in Pulse Points for two full days! These events will allow interns to connect with one another, immerse themselves in company culture, hear from senior and executive leadership teams, engage in fun and interactive professional development sessions, and participate in various health and wellness activities. To conclude this event, the team will host a social event (at Punch Bowl Social) to allow interns to unwind and connect in a less formal environment, where they can enjoy food, games, music, and fun!

Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent

The primary goal of our internship program is to develop a pipeline of top, diverse talent for future hiring and to convert eligible interns to FT entry-point roles. Work to accomplish that in a variety of ways! We prepare our interns to enter the workforce after graduation by giving them the opportunity to be involved in meaningful projects that managers design specifically for interns. The work our interns are completing is both engaging and rewarding. Interns will have the opportunity to work with team members to complete their project and are also expected to conduct a final presentation to share learnings and insights. In addition to project work, Elevance offers many training opportunities throughout the ten-week program that will help students excel in the workforce. These include a Campus to Corporate presentation, professional development series, and leadership speakers with an opportunity for question-and-answer sessions. Interns will learn more about their personal work styles and how to leverage their strengths through our Behavioral Styles Assessment and discussion. Managers will conduct a mid-point and final performance evaluation with interns to share feedback on strengths and developmental opportunities. Interns also have access to a wide variety of online Learning modules, Skillsoft, Harvard Manage Mentor, and our Career Development Navigator tool!
