This year, UnitedHealth Group launched an expanded virtual internship program and kept their commitment to providing students the best possible experience at the forefront of their virtual recruitment strategy. The result was an enhanced recruiting experience for students, grounded in transparency and honest communication.

Summer Internship Program
This year, UnitedHealth Group (UHG) not only honored their commitment of hiring summer interns, but actually increased their intern hiring in response to the COVID-19 crisis. By shifting to a virtual program, they were able to reinvest their savings to offer an additional 100 opportunities. They were able to create a robust, engaging virtual program centered on purposeful experiences for all interns. These experiences included an intern app, shark tank style presentations that promote cross-functional collaboration and networking, virtual leadership video messages, as well as enrichment opportunities and virtual tours.
In the face of COVID-19, UHG remained open in their approach to transitioning to a virtual program. They evaluated other companies’ strategies, technological solutions that would help them virtually, and listened to recent hire feedback on what they thought the virtual program should look like. These efforts culminated in an enhanced recruiting experience grounded in transparency, honest communication, and insights into a career at UHG. Features of this virtual experience included company culture and virtual office tour videos, as well as testimonials from program alumni and business leaders.
UHG’s commitment to providing students with the best possible experience was at the forefront this year, so the team decided to focus on personalizing the experience for both the recruitment team and candidates. This meant a process that included more video content, meaningful personal experiences with alumni and interns through testimonials, and opportunities to connect directly with recruiters 1 on 1 through the UHG platform.
Diversity and Inclusion
To recruit, retain and support a diverse slate of candidates UHG partnered with RippleMatch to help them identify and engage top diverse talent, as well as INROADS, a non-profit group to help them find interns with diverse backgrounds. In addition, they created testimonial videos of their alumni and interns to ensure students heard from a diverse set of individuals who were previously hired by UHG.
