Summer Internship Program

When it came to internships, American Express did not leave students in the dark. The team prioritized clear communication and each deadline, process, and next step was carefully communicated prior to the program kick-off so the summer could continue as smoothly as possible. After the internship started, the American Express team worked to foster a virtual community. Interns finished the summer with critical business skills and experience, as well as a better sense of American Express’ culture and what life is like as a part of the company.

Virtual Recruitment

When the American Express team learned they had to pivot to virtual recruiting, they viewed it as an opportunity to innovate. The first thing the team did was research: American Express wanted to know what worked and what didn’t. The team gathered as much information as possible on problems other firms faced when shifting to virtual recruitment, and looked into technologies that would help better candidate experience. In a short amount of time, and with a great amount of effort, the team at American Express narrowed down best practices, new candidate-friendly platforms, and began brainstorming ideas for recruiting events.

Candidate Experience

American Express has always had a candidate-first approach and this year was going to be no different. When approaching their virtual recruitment strategy, American Express prioritized interactive events like virtual networking to combat burnout and Zoom fatigue. The engaging events allowed candidates to get to know American Express in a more relaxed environment and have authentic conversations with American Express employees, giving them insight into what their future would look like if they chose to join the team and the people they would be working with.

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion has always been a priority for American Express, which is why the company invests in reaching diverse candidates. The team prioritized expanding their student base, and educating candidates on the company and opportunities available. Outside of  partnerships with diverse student organizations, American Express also updated their campus collateral this summer to better reflect their diverse workplace and highlight their standout approach to D&I.
