Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
Though some universities opened back up for on-campus events, the Zions Bancorporation college recruiting team primarily continued to focus on hosting virtual events with targeted student groups and using new technologies to reach the greatest audience. The Fairstream platform was used this past fall to implement the first "Zions Career Day", where potential candidates from all regions could join to learn more about the organization and programs. Part of the day also included a resume workshop to prepare students for the application process. Additionally, there is a focus on engaging previous interns or recent graduates from the full-time development program in the employee referral program to expand outreach. Candidates really enjoyed the opportunity to hear from leaders of business lines in the virtual "on-campus" events over the past year, where they were both able to learn about the organization and about the banking industry.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
The University Recruiting team at Zions Bancorporation has really focused on providing a personalized candidate experience. Candidates are able to participate in the Informational Interviewing Program to learn more about the organization prior to applying for a role. If a candidate isn't a fit for the initial role they apply for, the team works with candidates to refer them to other potential positions. Once an interview is set, a video is provided on how to be successful in virtual interviews, as well as program brochures and interviewer information with the calendar invites. Employees who have previously been in the role they're applying for are also included in the interview process. The team focuses on transparency with pay and the recruiting process to create a great experience for every candidate.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a key part of the culture at Zions Bancorporation. The Diversity Recruiter works closely with the college recruiting team to identify areas of opportunity within the campus outreach strategy. The Diversity Recruiter works with students to prepare them for applications and interviews, along with managing the informational interviewing program that allows students at all levels to meet both with current employees in an area of interest and/or employees that are involved in Business Resource Groups. All employees are able to receive support and mentorship from the Business Resource Groups during their time with the bank. Zions is also partnering with the University of Utah, Howard University, and Morgan State University to allow students from across the U.S. to work with the Zions Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Corporate Banking divisions, while living in Utah for the summer.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
The internship program within Zions Bancorporation focuses on allowing students to gain real work experience, paired with trainings and networking sessions to prepare them to enter the workforce. The interns are all paired with individual departments based on business need, giving them a personalized and in-depth experience within their area of study. Each week, interns have the opportunity to meet with at least one senior leader, including the CEO and division CEOs. Depending on the area of internship, interns are able to either interview for the full-time Banker Development Program or be offered a permanent role on the specialty team they’ve been working on.
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
The entry-level Banker Development Program at Zions allows recent graduates to take what they’ve learned during their undergraduate or graduate coursework and apply that knowledge to banking. The Banker Development Program analysts start with 4-5 months of initial training, where they are focusing on both hard and soft skills to prepare them for a career in the industry. As part of the initial training phase, they are provided with mentorship and networking sessions with executives. After the initial training phase, they rotate through different areas of the bank before being placed in the area of best fit. This program provides a clear path for the first ~5 years of a graduate’s career and allow them to build a strong network at the very beginning of their time with the bank.
