UnitedHealth Group was selected as a 2024 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of diverse talent. Multi-Faceted and Thoughtful Approach to University Recruitment
UHG continued with a hybrid approach to sourcing & recruitment. The sourcing team began a monthly virtual event series for pipelined candidates that were strategically sourced. Events highlighted intern and fulltime programs offered by UHG. Presenters included recruiters, hiring managers and previous interns who provided an in depth look at roles and answered questions from the audience. UHG also piloted a Student Ambassador Program. As Ambassadors, previous interns worked with the Early Careers team through the fall semester. During this time they connected with their peers on campus to candidly share their experiences during their internships. Ambassadors represented the UHG brand on campus, provided guidance to students on the application process and stay closely connected with the UHG colleagues after the formal internship ended.
Standout Candidate Experience
The candidate experience at UHG provides valuable information for candidates to determine what roles are a fit for their interest and skills. One examples is the case competition hosted by the sales recruiting team students from a Professional Selling class at a target university. Students learned about sales careers healthcare and engaged with directly with leaders. Also, recruiters from the corporate functions teams hosted an event at the Optum headquarters where students who are pursuing degrees in business met with recruiters, leaders and recent college hires to learn about the industry, company culture and career paths. This event was designed to showcase the multiple career path opportunities available to early career talent.
Impactful Internship Program
UnitedHealth Group’s early careers programs offer an exceptional intern experience. Internship programs are offered in a variety of work models from fully remote, hybrid and fully in office, so there is something for everyone. The signature experience for interns at UHG is the Minnesota Headquarters Experience. During the 7th week of the 10-week internship, all interns from across the country were invited to Minnesota for an impactful week of events. Interns heard from executive speakers and participated in breakout sessions centered around important topics in healthcare such as mental health. The week included networking events, such as a Minnesota State Fair-style kickoff event at Optum Circle, a networking evening at Target Field and a farewell celebration on Nicollet Island Pavilion with food, games and puppies!
