The Highlights of Stryker's Approach to Early Career Hiring
Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
Stryker believes that interns are the future talent for the company. One of their executives was recently quoted saying, “Internships are the lifeblood of this organization." In fact, Stryker's intern program has been the launching pad for hundreds of employees, including several Stryker Executives. So, in order to engage the right talent outside of traditional recruitment, they spark passion for the organization and the healthcare industry through events. To promote their mission with candidates, Stryker held school-agnostic engagement events that introduced applicants to the world of Stryker and covered topics such as: Robotics in Healthcare; The Changing Landscape of Manufacturing on Healthcare; and How Stryker leverages Power BI. These types of encounters allow them to better illustrate the opportunities available at Stryker and peak interest in an industry that these candidates may not have first-hand experience with.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
Interns are considered part of the Stryker family; therefore, they’re selected through the same rigorous process used for full-time employees and are afforded many of the Stryker benefits. This includes evaluation from an expert outside counsel, Gallup. Gallup ensures an inclusive hiring process that evaluates based on what matters most to the company: their award-winning corporate culture. This ensures that interns are better prepared for conversion to full time, and due to the nature of the process, improves candidate experience as they have multiple touch points throughout the recruitment process.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Stryker believes they are made stronger together by valuing differences. They understand the responsibility to accelerate efforts with respect to DE&I. Respect for individuals has always been a foundation of Stryker's culture. Building on this foundation, they continue to create an inclusive, engaging work environment and prioritize DE&I in keeping with their values of integrity—“We do what’s right.” To meet these commitments, Stryker increases jobs for Black Americans through active engagement as a founding member of the OneTen coalition. They prioritize diversity recruitment through partnerships with SWE, NSBE, SHPE, and HBCUs. Additionally, the company hosts recruitment events in partnership with our ERGs, and even have an ERG dedicated to understanding the gaps and opportunities in regard to emerging talent at Stryker.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
The Stryker internship program stands out as it directly influences the trajectory of their interns’ careers in the scope of work they experience. Each intern is given 3-5 significant projects, all in support of Stryker’s mission to make healthcare better. The organization's product portfolio is vast, so they have students in a wide range of disciplines. Uniquely to Stryker, they creatively engage and empower employees to be an instrumental part of the intern program experience. Interns have 4 employees dedicated to their experience: UR Recruiter, Manager, Advisor, and Intern Program Champion. Another interesting part of the program is “Intern Committees” where interns can a serve in a leadership capacity to further enhance their experience, and the experience of their peers. Additionally, interns are submerged into the culture with executive lunch-and-learns, ERG involvement, professional development seminars, and intern day of celebration!
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
Stryker takes great pride in their people, and that’s why they are committed to growing their early talent. The company wants them to succeed, which is why the culture offers them the opportunity to develop their careers based on their strengths and potential, including the possibility to move geographically, functionally, laterally and vertically. In navigating the transition from student to young professional, Stryker invests in and leans on the results of StrengthsFinder, and uses this to help early talent develop and commit to a leadership path early in their career, accessing accelerated learning opportunities and diverse experiences to become a great future leader. Additionally, 4 separate rotational programs are offered for those looking for accelerated career progression through exposure to and experience in different disciplines.
