Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

Spectrum attended virtual career fairs at schools with a strategic partnership in mind based on internship locations. Outside of career fairs, Spectrum engages with targeted student organizations, collaborates with diversity organizations, like T. Howard and Emma Bowen Foundations, and participates in other recruitment initiatives like resume reviews, mock interviews, and panels. When applicable, Spectrum utilizes intern alumni to serve as brand ambassadors at the aforementioned events to talk about their experiences as interns. Spectrum looks forward to engaging on-campus again to educate prospective interns about the internship, interview process, and Spectrum.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

In order to provide a best-in-class experience, Spectrum attended virtual recruiting and diversity events, hosted employer led panels, and collaborated with student organizations to engage with prospective interns. They hosted a hybrid internship in summer 2021, hosting 237 interns in total. Spectrum provided personal touches in onboarding; professional development throughout the internship, including an executive speaker series, a virtual kickoff day and graduation ceremony; and leadership development training; and provided their interns with a mentor. The team focuses on prompt communication at all stages of the application process, throughout the internship, and after completion.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

As a company, Spectrum aims to foster an inclusive culture and workplace where each and every person is empowered to bring their best ideas, and the internship is no different. Spectrum partners with foundations like T. Howard and Emma Bowen to recruit diverse talent. Additionally, on college campuses, Spectrum strives to engage with diverse student organizations like National Association of Black Accountants, Women in Technology, and National Society of Black Engineers. During the executive speaker series, the interns have heard from the Chief Diversity Officer and the VP of Multicultural Marketing, in addition to a diverse group of executives.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

Professional development makes up 20% of the 10-week summer internship. Professional development events include Navigating LinkedIn and Critical Thinking sessions, personality assessment, executive speaker series, Corporate 101 and Campus to Corporate panels, and virtual community service event and social media takeover in celebration of National Intern Day. Interns participated in a cross-functional group project, hackathon, where they researched a solution for a problem statement. Intern groups gave their presentations with the solution at the virtual graduation ceremony to managers, mentors, and executives. Winners were chosen through voting.
