Multi-Faceted and Thoughtful Approach to University Recruitment

SCJ’s summer, fall, and spring recruitment activities are structured in a hybrid approach with the flexibility of a mixture of virtual and on-campus events. SCJ encourages students from all colleges and universities to apply to internships and the team drives diversity recruiting through a school-agnostic approach with efforts across universities and select HBCUs. SCJ engages talent early in the recruitment process through a Summer Conference where attendees have the opportunity to learn about SCJ, the company’s values, employee resource groups, and functional teams as well as network with SCJ leaders and former interns. The event concludes with an opportunity to interview for an internship the following Summer. The SCJ team focuses on candidate experience through authentic and timely communications as well as a robust keep-warm strategy throughout months leading up to internships and Summer Conference with information about the company, team support, professional development resources, and more.

Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

SCJ’s recruitment efforts include a school-agnostic approach where talent from all colleges and universities have opportunities for internships at the family company. In addition, the team runs targeted programs at select HBCUs including a scholarship program with Howard University. The robust mentorship program at Howard allows SCJ Scholars to partner with SCJ leaders throughout the year on career goals, interview and resume reviews, professional networking and more. The program features a financial scholarship and fully funded travel to events at the SCJ corporate headquarters. SCJ is committed to ongoing efforts that help retain diverse talent who want to build a positive, inclusive environment. Learning and growth is supported through trainings (e.g., micromessaging, unconscious bias), organizational partnerships (e.g., Out and Equal, HACE, Seramount), community involvement and more. SCJ also has Employee Resource Groups for supporting young professionals, African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ+ employees and their allies.

Impactful Internship Program

SCJ internships are hands-on, challenging, meaningful and fun — designed for maximum impact and reward. Internship programs in each business function are tailored to the student’s field of study and include robust projects that are determined by each function based on business need. SCJ interns receive comprehensive trainings and professional development opportunities through a variety of sessions, tools and resources. Interns build relationships and receive consistent feedback and support through their manager, mentor, networking and exposure to executives, including the opportunity to present project work to senior leaders. Events throughout SCJ’s internships encourage immersion within business functions and the company as well as fun social events to build camaraderie among the internship class. Community Service opportunities are offered as well to connect interns to SCJ’s purpose of making communities where the company operates stronger.
