Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

Riot Games aims to lower barriers of entry for students. The team has a school-agnostic approach to recruitment by providing free, online engagements for students across the globe, regardless of institution. Tiered school approaches, on-campus recruitment, and other traditional methods of engagement have not helped their efforts to diversify our class and provide opportunities to a broader audience. Through their virtual informational sessions, presence at events such as Afrotech World and Grace Hopper, Riot Games want students to realize their dreams and confidently say that they can have a successful and meaningful career in the game industry.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

Riot Games helps students connect their passion for games to meaningful careers. The interview process is designed to hone into the necessary skills required for success, which includes an emphasis on soft skills and values. The best team members are those who are empathetic, strong collaborators and have deeply resonant values that they can contribute to in their career. Every interview leaves the candidate with plenty of time to ask questions. The hiring process should be a two way conversation where the student is empowered to learn about Riot Games and ensure that they can see themselves there in the long run.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

The University Programs team partners with amazing non profit organizations that share Riot Games' vision to empower, educate and retain underrepresented students in the industry. Internally, Riot Identity Groups play an integral role in mentoring and help retain entry level talent. Riot Games has groups focused on LGBTQ+ individuals, veterans, and communities of color, to name a few, that welcome interns from Day 1 and help them navigate the ins and outs of Riot Games as another form of mentorship outside their teams.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

The internship program starts with a special two-day onboarding program called Denewb, where interns not only learn about Riot's core values, but get to engage with the CEO and other key Rioters who unveil Riot's current and future goals. Additional program standouts include: craft mentorship through Rioter Identity Groups, learning and development courses, a senior leader speaker series, dedicated intern office hours, plus weekly socials ranging from Riot specific trivia and scavenger hunts, to dedicated game time to play Riot's products plus many more! To cap off the 2021 program, Riot extended full-time offers to the majority of interns which is currently at a 70% conversion rate.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

Riot is empathetic to the difficulties of starting a new role, especially for new grads. At Riot, all new hires begin their journey by going through Denewbification, or Denewb for short. This week-long onboarding course explores Riot’s core company values while navigating through the history of Riot and its trajectory. Riot invests heavily into this program by having senior leaders, such as the CEO, align new grads on Riot’s mission, how the company approaches work, and most importantly, how the teams work together. While at Riot, new grads have the opportunity to join communities of practice, attend training both internally and externally, and participate in 1:1 culture to learn from their fellow Rioters.
