The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
Oliver Wyman was selected as a 2023 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent, their emphasis on diversity & inclusion, and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring
Oliver Wyman believes that early talent is a huge part of a company’s success when forecasting for the future. That is why Oliver Wyman’s early talent team approach is important to the overall recruiting success — from the strategies in the internship program, to the entry-level hiring process. Oliver Wyman is excited to continuously build and establish many relationships across universities and industries in order to strengthen an outstanding program.
Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment
The campus team at Oliver Wyman realizes that it must take an innovative approach to the increasingly competitive early-talent market. Oliver Wyman hosts information and networking sessions at top universities to increase brand recognition and attract top talent. The in-person sessions allow candidates to understand what Oliver Wyman represents as a firm, and presents students with the opportunity to learn about what a day in the life of a consultant could look like. Oliver Wyman also participates in many DE&I-focused events to attract diverse talent, including OW-hosted programming and external conferences. Once candidates are in the interview stage, the Oliver Wyman team prioritizes candidate experience by having final round interviews held in the nearest OW office, as well as being available for questions at any point during the process.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
At Oliver Wyman, Diversity and Inclusion are key components of the recruiting strategy. Oliver Wyman hosts various in-person and virtual experiences for students from marginalized backgrounds, including a Diversity Leadership Summit (which is a 3-day conference for 2nd and 3rd year students). Many of these events are school-agnostic, allowing the company to connect with students across the country. In recent years, its presence at HBCUs (virtually and in-person) has increased. Oliver Wyman sponsors several organizations dedicated to supporting diverse talent and providing career prep. Through these partnerships the company attends and hosts sessions about consulting, showcasing the different career options at the firm. Additionally, Oliver Wyman has employee resource groups for constituents and allies, and Affinity Networks for different identities.
Impactful Internship Program
Oliver Wyman believes that a robust internship program is key to early talent success, and is a strong entry-level pathway for consultants. Oliver Wyman has 30-50 interns per year, with a 90-99% return offer rate and over a 70% acceptance rate on return offers. This program allows students to gain real-world exposure and experience in a client-facing environment. Interns are assigned to a consulting project for the summer, which can be tied to a variety of industries such as financial services, energy, healthcare, and many more. Each intern is assigned a buddy and Talent Manager to provide mentorship throughout the summer. OW interns have the opportunity to work on real-life projects, travel with their project team, and attend training and networking events. Interns receive formal feedback at the midpoint and end of summer experience focusing on their growth and development.
Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent
New consultants joining the firm out of university participate in an array of onboarding to help them integrate successfully into the firm and set them up for long term success. This includes a two-week onboarding program that is broken into training on firm culture and the business, followed by specialized consulting toolkit training. Consultants then begin on their apprenticeships to acclimate and get a hands-on learning experience of what it means to be a consultant. Post-apprenticeship, the hands-on learning continues as consultants move onto new projects and enroll in future trainings to expand on their toolkits. New consultants are provided multiple mentors, including a Talent Manager, a Career Advisor, Consultant Buddy, and Local Office Lead, who together are invested in their development and success at the firm.
