The Highlights of Northwestern Mutual's Approach to Early Career Hiring
Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
The University Relations team kicked off the fall 2022 recruiting season with a "Building Your Professional Brand" Zoom series, inviting students from any university to provide insights on interviewing tips, resume prep, and understanding how to choose opportunities that best align to their goals. The UR team participated in virtual and in-person events throughout the recruiting season, including career fairs, networking nights, recruiter panels, mock interviews, and more. The team leveraged former and current interns to share opportunities with their network, and utilized virtual platforms, like RippleMatch, to source additional talent.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
The University Relations team at Northwestern Mutual is with candidates every step of the way. The UR team is the primary point of contact while on campus, reviewing applications, conducting screenings, recommending candidates to managers based on the candidate's area of study and areas of interest, and throughout their robust keep-in-touch campaign during the school year. The team conducts regular check-ins with managers and interns to track their hiring process and internship program successes and opportunities and make adjustments to provide the best-in-class process for all parties involved.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Northwestern Mutual is committed to equitable hiring and building an inclusive and diverse workforce. The University Relations team has complete support from leadership on diverse recruiting initiatives and has built a variety of partnerships to increase the volume of underrepresented candidates. These include: building relationships with HBCU's, HSI's, attending conferences like National Black MBA and Grace Hopper, sponsoring HBCU First, and leveraging local partnerships like All-in-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Fellows, which are both focused on developing local underrepresented talent. Interns have the opportunity to join Employee Resources Groups and learn about D&I at NM while interning.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
Interns at Northwestern Mutual are aligned to roles that would mirror a full-time opportunity. Interns relocating for the summer have housing provided in Milwaukee. Interns are paired with a hiring manager and a formal mentor, who serves as an additional professional development resource. Interns can participate in social events, professional development workshops, Q&A's with the C-Suite, volunteering, coffee chats, and Hack-a-Thon (tech interns) / Shark Tank (non-tech intern) events. Interns can get immersed with the Employee Resource Groups, and it's hard to pass up access to the fitness center and free lunch daily in the corporate offices!
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
Northwestern Mutual is a workplace that treats all employees well. Working at the corporate headquarters in Milwaukee, WI provides so much visibility and exposure to leadership and professionals. There's opportunities to get involved with mentorship programs, Employee Resource Groups, and there are internal mobility opportunities available. With incentives like free lunch in the office and an on-site fitness center and frequent raffles for suite tickets to sporting events, new hires have robust exposure to learn and grow at the epicenter of the organization!
