The Highlights of New Relic's Approach to Early Career Hiring

Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

New Relic decided to look at schools with diverse populations that other employers may not be engaging as heavily with. For example, the company learned that Georgia Southern University has more Black engineering graduates than any HBCU. The team is partnering with their Association of Computing Machinery club and traveled to campus (3 hours from ATL) during a week that wasn't going to be at the same time as their career fair. The team wasn't asking students to remember New Relic out of 50+ employers and instead, have their undivided attention and can make a big impression on them. The team gave their information session presentation and then stayed an hour after to offer students resume review help.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

New Relic makes sure to talk with their candidates about the interview process. If they are interviewing for a program, they walk them through what to expect in the entirety of their training program including timelines of when they can expect to hear back. They want the candidates to feel prepared and confident and to reduce ambiguity. The team is also firm believers in transparency too. They talk about compensation upfront and, with interns, help candidates weigh their options for location and role to align them with the best chance for future success.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

New Relic partners primarily with student groups across the country focused on underrepresented students and offer dollars along with their services with resume reviews and interview help. When interns start with New Relic they all undergo Allyship 101 and participate in networking sessions with ERG leadership. New Relic also makes sure they have speakers from the company that represent a diverse slate of individuals and talk about their experiences as women and POC in tech.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

In the summer of 2021, the intern program was made of 94% underrepresented students. The program had an NPS of 10 and the team was able to extend full-time offers to 80% of Product interns. The team did an Instagram campaign focused on their interns, and launched a new intern program video for National Intern Day created by an intern, and they gave interns shoutouts in Global All Hands meetings for creating Pride Month Zoom backgrounds and documentation for pronouns on Zoom and Slack. Two of the interns presented their intern projects to the Black Girl Magic ERG. New Relic makes sure their interns are celebrated and included as if they were already FT permanent employees.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

New Relic has two programs for sales and Product called Ignite. In the sales program, new hires go through a two-year program where they get a competitive base wage ($62,500) during their first three months of training, then they go into a production role for 9 months before being up-leveled into an Associate AE. After two years they become Commerical AEs, which normally takes people 5 years to achieve but through a solid training model, mentorship, and check-ins they are getting continuously developed. With Product, they are in a program for 2-6 months and go through a series of 2-week rotations where they are paired with a mentor for every rotation. After 3 years, the programs have a 100% retention rate.
