The Highlights of Kohler's Approach to Early Career Hiring
Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
Switching from in-person events to online platforms in 2020 was necessity. While the team thought they'd be back to campuses in 2021, it was not the case. In addition to the online processes of career fairs, the Kohler team engaged subject matter experts and business leaders to speak with students, driving their enthusiasm through real life story-telling. Former interns/co-ops were also asked to share their stories on their own campuses. The team completed presentations with product, shown videos, and enacted their Business Resource Groups to meet with students and assist with mentoring. Ensuring student successes really motivates the entire Kohler early career recruiting team.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
Kohler believes that a gracious experience, whether in product or process, is key to all that they do. The Talent Acquisition process follows along that same thought process. From accurate and engaging position postings, to clear communication during the process, to personalized follow-up, the applicant is their first priority. The team has a belief in Continuous Improvement across the Company, so, seeking feedback and utilizing that feedback aid in making the process top-notch. The team takes time to send personal emails. They answer questions. They will be honest, knowing that is the best way to forge a new relationship with someone who is interested in becoming part of the company.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Developing outreach in campus relations diversity was a newer priority for the team in 2020. To best attract diverse students, the leader from Talent leaned on the company's Business Resource Groups (particularly Black Catalyst), while engaging with specific HBCUs. The company was also strategic in attending SWE, NSBE and hosting engaging online conversations called The Shift to address racism, diversity and belonging. Their efforts show actions that best ensure the company is in the best place possible for supporting diverse hires.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
At Kohler, interns and co-ops are active associates, participating in hands-on activities in their workspace, with presentations at the end of their cohorts. Kohler provides opportunity for growth and development through leadership panels, peer to peer panels, giving back opportunities, mentoring K-12 students, owning internal communication channels and involvement with the local Chamber.
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
Kohler believes in Gracious Living within our product lines, and embraces that for their associates as well. Wages are competitive, sign-on bonuses and relocation assistance are offered, mentors/coaches within the department as well as throughout the company, and endless networking opportunities. Additionally, personal growth is encouraged through onsite classes, LinkedIn Learning, prescribed learning times and a regular cadence of company townhalls and Leadership Edge Series broadcasts.
