Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
Johnson Matthey has continued host and attend events through the virtual landscape to find and attract the best talent. They've adapted quickly to the new style of online career fairs and were pleased to give away new and improved swag at a few safe, in-person fairs when possible. The Early Careers team developed a fully virtual Assessment Center, equipped with a virtual escape room, to safely replace the usual hiring process for the global rotational program. In addition, JM leverages the relationships with former interns and alumni networks to introduce the company to local chapters of societies like NSBE, SWE, SASE, and SHPA.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
At Johnson Matthey, attracting and developing talented people is crucial to reaching the vision of a cleaner and healthier world. From an early careers perspective, JM understands how challenging it can be to make the transition from academia to industry. The US Graduate Program offers candidates an interactive interview process that includes a casual dinner with leaders and HR in the business, a full day of assessed activities alongside fellow candidates, and a tour of a local manufacturing site. Following the interview day, all candidates are offered a one-on-one session to give feedback on the process, receive their feedback from interviewers, and learn tips for going forward.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Integral to Johnson Matthey's culture are two fundamental beliefs that all differences matter and that all people are valued. JM's aim is attract a broad talent pool at all career levels, including entry level. JM is continuously working on building new relationships with diverse universities, STEM scholarship foundations, and local chapters of diversity-focused networks. Science and Me is a program that was started internally to give access to quality science education for all. Through this, JM provides resource to disadvantage, low income, or excluded learners to study STEM. Additionally, JM has many ERGs and dedicated resources to D&I internally to help foster a culture of inclusion.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
The Johnson Matthey Internship Program offers an integrated and challenging experience for interns to gain real world experience to take into industry or back to academia. All interns at JM are provided a project outline with measurable goals to complete in their 10-12 weeks, with discretionary bonus potential. Interns also follow a development curriculum that includes online learning, mentoring, and classroom style learning via bi-weekly virtual lunch and learns. There is a great network of former and current interns from all over the US who enjoy networking. This experience has led JM to maintain a 100% retention rate after 1 year for former interns converted to full time employees.
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
Any new job means learning new things, meeting new people, and taking on new responsibilities. Johnson Matthey ensures that all new hires are supported in this journey, and especially those who are just starting their career. All new hires go through an onboarding program in which they are provided information on the company, a buddy, and a guide to help get them started on meeting new colleagues. JM offers many opportunities to learn new soft skills through formal training, as well as career pathing tools to understand advancement at JM. Those involved in the Global Graduate Program benefit from an individually tailored, 2 year development program leading them to a long-term career at JM.
