The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
Freddie Mac was selected as a 2024 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of diverse talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Multi-Faceted and Thoughtful Approach to University Recruitment
At Freddie Mac, the university recruiting team prepares for their upcoming recruitment season by understanding the current market, students’ preferences, company objectives and hiring goals to shape their talent attraction strategy. In a combination of in-person and virtual events, Freddie Mac’s strategy includes on-campus events at core schools, diversity conferences and events with key DEI partners such as HBCUs and HSIs, school agnostic informational events and strategic outreach to share their upcoming student opportunities. Once students learn about the company and its early career opportunities, the team further supports candidates through the recruitment process by providing interview resources, sharing timely updates on where they are in the process and being available to answer any questions.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Freddie Mac attracts and sustains a pipeline of early career underrepresented talent by partnering with Hispanic Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In addition, Freddie Mac maintains regional and national partnerships with diversity organizations to include the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Hispanic Heritage Fund, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Hispanic Technology Executive Council, Rangam and diversity-sourcing sites such as RippleMatch, WayUp, myGWork and others. Freddie Mac’s retention efforts include inclusive engagement activities via ten business resource groups, professional development programs focused on preparedness, mentorship initiatives and community service opportunities.
Impactful Internship Program
Freddie Mac’s internship program goes beyond the eleven weeks the students are with the company for the summer. It begins during recruitment and onboarding with regular check-ins and newsletters to keep them apprised of current events and relevant information at the company. Ahead of their first day, multiple informational events are held to provide further information on the work they will be doing, the onboarding process and what to look forward to within their program. Throughout the summer, all interns at Freddie Mac participate in a variety of events including a recruitment workshop, an opportunity to meet the CEO, a financial education workshop and social hours to provide enrichment opportunities in addition to their team work. The university recruiting team works directly with the business to identify full-time opportunities to convert their interns upon graduation, which resulted in a 90% acceptance rate from their Summer 2023 interns.
