The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
Fifth Third Bank was selected as a 2023 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent, their emphasis on diversity & inclusion, and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring
Fifth Third Bank has over 30 years of experience developing recent college graduates. Its college leadership programs are an important part of itsculture. That’s because the relationships its program participants build last beyond the 2 years in the program. From attraction to advancement, Fifth Third Bank connects candidates with a supportive network of leaders and peers, strengthens their knowledge and skills, and helps them do their best and be their authentic self — because the company believes in the collective power of individuality.
Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment
Big decisions come with incredible excitement – and maybe a little anxiety, too. That’s why Fifth Third Bank puts students at the center of its University Relations and multicultural strategies to keep their experiences smooth and seamless from start to finish. Every step of the way, speed, personalization, and inclusion are the name of the game because Fifth Third Bank recognizes that today’s top talent has plenty of choices out there. Students can count on Fifth Third Bank to be their advocates and champions, bridge builders, and dot-connectors.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Fifth Third Bank approaches inclusion and diversity as a strategic imperative that is critical to its ability to achieve its vision, which is to be the one bank people most value and trust. Fifth Third Bank integrates its efforts into one engine for positive change that drives innovation, growth, and sustainability. The Banks’ multicultural Recruitment Strategy was launched at Fifth Third in 2017 as part of its $32 billion Community Commitment. The strategy focuses on assisting the Bank in achieving a more diverse workforce by establishing relationships with HBCUs to provide internships and long-term employment to underrepresented students. The company develops strong partnerships with HBCUs by providing value added services to universities and their students. The bank employs a One Bank approach that ensures that it aligns across the enterprise on the efforts and initiatives that make up its program. This includes financial literacy, career readiness, philanthropic giving, student engagement, experiential learning, and executive sponsorship.
Impactful Internship Program
Fifth Third Bank’s intern program is structured around providing a great work experience, exposure to peers, managers and leaders, structured education for their development, and resources to use on the job. Regardless of where the internship is located, interns can expect to spend approximately 80% of their time dedicated to the internship assignment, and 20% of their time in other development activities. They can also expect clearly defined work assignments and expectations, as well as a plan to ensure communication and connection with the work group.
Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent
Similar to its internship program, the Bank’s full-time college leadership programs are structured around what it calls the 4Es — providing a great work experience, exposure to peers, managers and leaders, structured education for their development, and resources to use on the job (environment). Program participants leverage the Bank’s Early Career Learner framework, which guides participants through formal learning and debrief opportunities focused on building early career competencies, such as networking, relationship building, and asking for & receiving feedback. Participants also learn about the fundamentals of banking and the company’s various Line of Business in its Banking 101 series.
