The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
eBay was selected as a 2023 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent, their emphasis on diversity & inclusion, and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring
eBay believes in developing the future of tech through Emerging Talent Recruiting and Programs. The Emerging Talent Recruiting and Programs team exists to fuel eBay’s success with the best in early career talent. The team provides strategic, developmental, and engaging programming that helps early-in-career talent individuals grow and thrive, with a particular focus on supporting underrepresented communities. One of the program’s goals is to open the door for opportunities to individuals who may never have imagined a career in tech would be available to them. With its award-winning intern program and its successful recent-grad programs, eBay aims to illustrate that when the community comes together, everyone wins.
Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment
The Emerging Talent team at eBay goes above and beyond to connect with the next generation of emerging talent. The company has adopted a school-agnostic and diverse recruitment strategy for emerging talent, and partnered with various diversity organizations (re-writing the code, Battle of the Brains, Latinx Fest, NextPlay) to create opportunities for underrepresented talent. Partnering with organizations like this allows eBay recruiters to have meaningful connections with prospective talent and allows candidates to learn more about opportunities within eBay. The team has also created digital recruitment strategies alongside the Emerging Talent Programs team to implement campaigns on LinkedIn that highlight open positions. Once students enter the pipeline at eBay, the team prioritizes candidate experiences by ensuring candidates understand the interview process and can learn about eBay’s eco-system in efforts to help them in their interview process.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
The eBay Emerging Talent Recruiting and Programs team exists to fuel eBay’s success with the best early-in-career talent. eBay has practices that ensure it has the top, most diverse, early career talent that can help shape the future. eBay recruits for diverse talent by partnering with diverse organizations and collegiate institutions — including Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions — as well as by attending tech conferences like Grace Hopper Conference that focus on recruiting young female talent. eBay also sponsors events that focus on diverse and untapped communities, and partners with tools and platforms to source diverse candidate slates.
Impactful Internship Program
The Emerging Talent Programs team at eBay builds a unique internship program that focuses on the eBay eco-system. The team has created a program that is informative, inspires learning, and is inclusive of all backgrounds and roles. The engagement strategy falls into four pillars: the eBay ecosystem, innovation opportunities, building community within the program and through ERGs, and intern development workshops. Interns participate in various development activities throughout the summer, including virtual and in-person learning opportunities, team outings, social events, Lunch & Learns, and volunteer opportunities. The program metrics from 2022 show major intern satisfaction with the program. Ninety eight percent rated the internship as a positive experience, 85% stated their internship at eBay was better than peer experiences outside of eBay, 98% of interns had a meaningful summer project, and interns acquired 330 new skills that will help them in their future careers.
Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent
eBay’s Emerging Talent Programs create a unique experience for recent college graduates (RCG) that is engaging and inclusive of all roles and backgrounds. RCGs have access to many tools and resources, including access to senior employees who share exciting projects and their own career journeys, workshops for career planning, networking, and career progression (including performance reviews), and cross-collaboration and participation with internal programs for full-time employees, such as a Design Summit, eBay Amplify, and others. Specific RCG events include development workshops surrounding professional skills and executive presence, community events to get the RCG community together and make new connections in person, "Give Back" events to give back to local communities, leadership opportunities with participation in panels, and mentorship between ERGs and interns. To date, eBay has a thriving community of 200 RCGs who have created impactful solutions for the eBay platform, assumed leadership roles, and provided mentorship to summer interns.
