Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

Eaton has reduced their campus footprint in order to be more intentional with their recruitment efforts. They have created new partnerships to enhance their brand, leveraging digital tools wherever possible. Examples: Eaton has reduced the overall number of campuses, but integrated HBCUs and HSIs; they have developed podcasts and digital content to share in a campus-agnostic format to help talent get a realistic preview of life Eaton; they have become more transparent in what they share, including their newly published Global Inclusion & Diversity Transparency Report with candidates so that they can see for themselves where Eaton stands in the DE&I space in an unfiltered way.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

The recruiting and hiring teams collaborate seamlessly to ensure that every step of the candidate experience is intentional - from application, to onboarding, to the learning experience. The teams have taken the time to map out the critical steps of each interaction, and have designed ways to make connections - even if being together in person is not possible. Examples include a microsite designed for early talent candidates while they evaluate their job offers; verbal offers extended directly by the Program Managers, so that questions can be answered thoroughly; a revised on-boarding experience; and a newly developed learning curriculum, integrating a 70/20/10 model.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

Eaton has several key strategies: first, they have long-standing partnerships with NSBE, SHPE & SWE as board members. Eaton participates in national and regional events each year, and provide substantial scholarships to these organizations. The team partners with inclusion resource groups at Eaton to help expand their partnerships with these organizations, beyond just recruitment but in retention and development for current employees. Eaton has integrated technologies (such as RippleMatch) that increase their pipeline across campuses to help better match with top talent. Eaton has also created a leadership position dedicated fully to diversity recruitment strategies in the early talent space.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

Eaton prioritizes their internships. They have created a hub model for internships to help ensure quality of assignment; exposure to various levels of leadership in the company; and a network of interns from other functions to build relationships. The hubs are located in Eaton facilities where there is both business leadership, but close proximity to manufacturing sites (where the work gets done). Interns will have a unique, real world project that they personally drive. They will also have a learning series that they go through as a cohort, to enhance their development and build capability, grounded in Eaton's Leadership Model. The hub model combines both in-person and virtual opportunities.
