The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
Duolingo was selected as a 2024 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of diverse talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Multi-Faceted and Thoughtful Approach to University Recruitment
Duolingo's university recruiting and programs team attracts and hires talent by employing a relationship-first model. The team has successfully recruited students from around the globe by relying on both in-person and virtual strategies that focus on bringing students and Duos (aka Duolingo employees) together. Specifically, Duolingo's team has scaled its interns as active on-campus ambassadors, hosted city-specific meetups during the summer while students are interning and conducting research, and leveraged its multi-year long relationships with diversity-focused organizations such as ColorStack and Rewriting the Code through virtual and in-person conferences.
Standout Candidate Experience
Duolingo's recruitment and programs team focuses on setting up the candidate for success at all stages of the interview process. This is seen from the beginning of the process with explicit pay transparency, through the interview process with active communication and a wealth of prep materials, and after the interview with an invitation to visit HQ to learn more IRL before making a final decision. Duolingo prides itself on providing transparency, resources, and access so that candidates can feel confident at every stages of the process.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Duolingo’s team recruits underrepresented talent at the entry-level through their close partnerships with school-agnostic diversity-focused student organizations, prioritizing conferences that uplift underrepresented voices, and by providing accessible prep resources and connection to all candidates during the interview process. Duolingo retains underrepresented early talent by providing opportunities for autonomy, growth, and connection during its new graduate and internship programs - this includes for its rising-junior internship program, the Thrive Program, which is specifically for underrepresented talent in tech.
