The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
DHL Supply Chain was selected as a 2023 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent, their emphasis on diversity & inclusion, and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring
Since its program was founded more than a decade ago, DHL Supply Chain has learned that students think big, move fast, and love to solve complex challenges. So, it modeled its program to help students think critically about the complex world of supply chain logistics, while also helping them navigate finding their passion to build long, rewarding careers. It’s part of the reason DHL Supply Chain is recognized internationally as a ‘Great Place to Work’ with a supportive culture where people are valued, respected, and encouraged to keep learning, growing, and achieving their career goals.
Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment
The DHL Supply Chain College Recruiting team takes a continuous improvement mindset every season to ensure it is servicing the business, as well as making the experience for students personalized and impactful. Its mission is to proactively recruit a pipeline of future leaders to support the continued growth of the business, while providing professional and personal development opportunities for college recruits. The team takes a hybrid approach on campus, with 60+ target schools where it is heavily involved on campus. The team has also leveraged online platforms to expand outreach efforts, making its approach to interact with universities a tiered approach and allowing its recruiting to be school-agnostic at the core. The team has a three-step approach — it meets with the student or reviews a submitted resume, conducts a first-round virtual interview and finally, hosts a final round that provides interns and full-time candidates the opportunity to come on-site for a full-day event. DHL Supply Chain hosts both Intern Day’s and College Days.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Diversity and inclusion is a key part to the strategy as a division of DPDHL. The goal is to create a culture where everyone at DHL Supply Chain can bring their true selves to work every day — including interns and college recruits. Of the 60 target schools, many are diverse in nature — and include HBCUs, HSIs, universities in rural areas, and universities for more urban areas. By taking this approach, the company has had some of the most diverse intern and college recruits classes. In fact, 32% of its most recent intern and college recruit classes were female.
Impactful Internship Program
Interns are dedicated to a specific team or site for 10-12 weeks while participating in DHL Supply Chain’s formalized Summer Internship Program, with a goal to enhance students’ business acumen through continuous learning and networking opportunities. Throughout the summer, interns can vote for professional development workshops, and participate in a speaker series that allows them to learn about an area of the business and connect with senior leaders. They also participate in Site Overview presentations to learn about different sectors, sites, customers, and locations. The highlight of the intern program is the Intern Capstone event, in which interns and business partners are brought together from across North America for two days. Interns participate in industry workshops, local site tours, present their Capstone Project, participate in social responsibility-focused activities, take professional headshots, and attend speed networking and several speaker series. During the last three years, the team has successfully offered full-time positions to more than 80% of interns.
Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent
Those hired through the College Recruiting program are enrolled in the College Recruit Development Program for the first two years of their full-time employment with DHL Supply Chain. The goal of the program is to help newly hired College Recruits acclimate to company culture, complete trainings, and develop skills necessary to navigate their career with DHL. During those two years, they receive 6 or more one-on-one coaching sessions with the College Recruit Development Manager and mentor sessions through a Connected Peers program with individuals that are 2+ years into their career with DHL Supply Chain. They will attend College Recruit Training Week in Westerville, OH at North American headquarters. They also will receive classroom and eLearning opportunities, career development guidance, and feedback, as well as Monthly Newsletters.
