The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
ConocoPhillips was selected as a 2023 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent, their emphasis on diversity & inclusion, and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring
ConocoPhillips has always embraced university recruitment as a key hiring strategy. Bringing new people with fresh ideas into ConocoPhillips is vital to the company’s future. The company’s continued success requires a strong global workforce that can contribute the right skills, in the right places, to achieve strategic objectives. Exciting full-time positions and summer internship opportunities are available for students and graduates who are ready to explore the endless possibilities at ConocoPhillips.
Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment
ConocoPhillips recruits in-person and virtually from a number of universities in the U.S. to attract diverse candidates for full-time positions and summer internships. The relationship between the company and the universities supported is important. In partnership with campuses, ConocoPhillips contributes to various student chapters and multicultural, military and disability programs —- not just to pursue talent that aligns with the company’s values, but also as a good citizen in the communities of which the company is a part. ConocoPhillips visits many universities and participates in student organization activities and career fairs on campus, with the majority of university recruiting taking place in the fall semester.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
ConocoPhillips values all forms of diversity, provides equitable programs and promotes a culture of inclusion. To attract diverse candidates for full-time positions and summer internships, the company has partnerships with diverse organizations, such as the National Society of Black Engineers and INROADS. By attending conferences and recruiting at HSIs like the University of Houston and HBCUs like Prairie View A&M University, ConocoPhillips is able to extend a broader outreach to potential candidates. Additionally, the company makes financial contributions to universities and designates a significant portion of its university contributions budget to programs advancing DEI. All newly hired employees are provided with training and development programs designed to optimize their career at ConocoPhillips. Employee networks provide an important forum for discussion, development, and connection to the communities in which the company operates. These networks are led by employees with guidance and involvement from leadership.
Impactful Internship Program
Enormous pride is taken in the U.S. Summer Internship Program, which strives to offer a compelling, hands-on experience. Interns are provided with challenging assignments that will enrich knowledge about their field of study and the company, knowledgeable mentors, and engaging activities to help them grow their skills and network. The ConocoPhillips Intern Program includes professional, social, volunteer and team activities such as development presentations, community outreach, a drilling rig visit, and teambuilding with other interns. The company’s investment in the intern program leads to an 82% conversion rate of interns to hires.
Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent
Employees are empowered to grow their careers through personal and professional development opportunities. Employees can identify opportunities for on-the-job development, mentorship, coaching and formal training through career conversations with their supervisors. Employees are also encouraged to create Individual Development Plans, a development tool that captures employees’ long-term career plans. Numerous training and development offerings are provided to equip the workforce with the skills, knowledge, and self-awareness to advance DEI efforts. Additionally, new employees with less than three years of experience at ConocoPhillips automatically receive active membership in the New Hire Network. As one of the largest employee network groups, the New Hire Network serves as a fun, engaging way to meet other newly hired employees. The group organizes events and activities that can help new hires build a network of friends and resources, and otherwise facilitate immersion into the organization.
