The Pillars of an Award-Winning Program
CBIZ was selected as a 2023 Campus Forward Award Winner for their unwavering commitment to seeking out and hiring early career talent, their emphasis on diversity & inclusion, and investments in nurturing and retaining the next generation of talent. Please see below for the highlights of their approach to early career recruitment.
Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring
In a society where we can choose where to work and who to spend time with, CBIZ is consistently evaluating and elevating the employee experience. By crafting teams of early talent that have a mixture of shared experiences and different worldviews, CBIZ is dedicated to the stories that staff members are creating while at CBIZ. This award-winning approach provides opportunities for nationwide networking, mentorship, and advanced level work. Through investing in early career talent, CBIZ has encouraged teammates to share their stories in a way that contributes to the powerful shared narrative that is changing what it means to work in public accounting.
Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment
CBIZ recognizes that campus recruiting is a critical starting point for bringing in top talent to staff teams. In the past five years, the campus recruiting team has grown 300% to ensure that candidates receive world-class experiences starting from the first touch point. Through crafting partnerships with 275 universities across the nation, providing presentations or networking events to various student organizations, and creating a hybrid approach for both virtual and in person opportunities, CBIZ has expanded its reach far and wide. Not to mention the creation and implementation of CBIZ’s premiere recruiting event, Career Academy, held during the fall and winter semesters, which connects students to professionals for an all-star panel Q&A, breakout rooms, and exposure to top CBIZ leadership. Though a firm with 6,000+ employees, the recruiting process ensures that each candidate is instantly connected to CBIZ staff and provides an opportunity to be known and to thrive.
Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
Answering calls to strengthen D&I initiatives, CBIZ has been working intentionally to find innovative solutions to creating spaces for those with marginalized and/or underrepresented identities within the public accounting field. In working with college campuses across the nation, CBIZ has crafted relationships with student-led organizations such as the National Association of Black Accountants and the Association of Latino Professionals For America. CBIZ continues to elevate the experiences of its marginalized teammates by providing employee resource groups and community support for teammates who identify as female, African American, Latinx, and Queer. CBIZ has spent the last year critically evaluating and growing their university partnerships with institutions that support marginalized students, such as with HSIs like the University of Colorado Denver, and more. While it is understood that recruiting talent of underrepresented groups is important, CBIZ recognizes that it is a critical part of creating a shared narrative for all.
Impactful Internship Program
At CBIZ, interns receive robust opportunities to help assist in their professional development. CBIZ enables its teams across the nation to provide well-rounded internship experiences that best align with needs of the current intern class. Interns can expect to get face-time with top leadership, participate in the national intern learning series, and most importantly, do real billable work for clients, including site visits. It is the hope that CBIZ interns will return as full-time associates, so from day one of their internship, CBIZ staff members treat interns as such. In addition to their workload, interns engage in events such as scavenger hunts, happy hours, volunteer work, and team sports. Interns have a seat at the table and are encouraged to use their voice to create positive change and bring solutions forward. It’s in that vein that CBIZ has seen such success with creating meaningful experiences for interns.
Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent
CBIZ begins its investment in its staff starting from day one of their internship, which leads to a strong conversion rate into full-time associates. The investment in staff stems from three realms: personal, professional, and financial. CBIZ offers staff a robust financial package for completing the CPA within the first two years of employment, as well as competitive salaries and bonuses. Personally, CBIZ helps to connect their staff members to local organizations for opportunities for community involvement. As a professional, CBIZ offers dedicated mentorship, year-round training opportunities, and regularly scheduled check-ins during the first year to ensure their transition to CBIZ is successful. Staff are given the freedom to explore opportunities and interests within public accounting in a space that is both welcoming and encouraging. In the words of CBIZ’s motto, “our people matter,” CBIZ is raising the bar on what it means to invest and retain top-tier staff.
