Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

As the recruiting world continued to change, the CarMax College Recruiting Team pivoted their strategy to engage with students as effectively as possible. The team continued to successfully interact with students virtually through career fairs, virtual workshops, hackathons, and other events. To increase branding and engagement, the team also attended smaller scale in-person events at some of the local colleges where they were able to chat with students face-to-face and make new connections. In addition to events, the CarMax team turned to past interns to act as ambassadors and speak to the high caliber programs CarMax offers as well as the culture that makes CarMax a unique place to work.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

The early careers team at CarMax implements the company’s value of Putting People First into every step of their application process. They work hard to ensure that students are fully informed about CarMax and the position they are applying to. A few ways the team at CarMax creates a positive experience is by providing Case Interview Prep Workshops, sending candidates interview preparation materials, including Q&A sessions during interviews, and providing interview results within 1-2 business days. The team partners with university career services as well as previous candidates to understand how to improve their interview processes to ensure the best possible candidate experience.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

The CarMax culture of diversity and inclusion is built on a foundation of integrity and respect, driven by their core values. The College Recruiting Team is passionate about recruiting diverse students and recognize the importance of students with diverse backgrounds joining CarMax at the early career level. The team works to build relationships with HBCUs as well as organizations such as SWE and NSBE. In addition to working with schools and organizations, CarMax participates in diversity-focused events such as female focused hackathons. CarMax associates are continuously learning about D&I through micro-learnings, that are applied to their recruitment strategy.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

At CarMax, interns get to experience what it is like to work for a Fortune 500 company in areas such as Technology, Data Analytics, Product, Accounting and Process Engineering. During the program interns own projects that make an impact on the business and provide them with opportunities to learn new skillsets. In addition to their projects, interns are immersed in the CarMax culture by meeting with Senior Leaders, attending networking events, team builders, and community service events. Interns engage with each other on a regular basis by attending intern-led lunch and learns and events outside of work.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

CarMax values giving associates the opportunity to try and learn new things. There are 2 rotational programs offered to recent graduates in Data Analytics and Technology. These programs offer on-the-job training while working on impactful projects during rotations. Associates in this program will build their network by meeting and working with Senior Leadership and other associates across the enterprise.
