Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring

Carbon believes that early career talent is the future. With new technologies learned in school combined with individual experimental factors, early career talent is an important part of the company’s growth and innovation roadmap. Interns have left a long-term impact on the advancement of Carbon’s products and technologies, largely due in part to the role interns play doing real-world work while at Carbon. Carbon has committed to supporting early career talent by providing opportunities for growth through its onboarding, regular learning opportunities, and professional mentorship program. As a mid-sized startup, Carbon has a proven foundation and track record to allow for early career talent to learn from more established employees, while also being agile enough to allow for collaboration and innovation.

Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment

With a mission that goes beyond 3D printing, Carbon’s technology enables creators everywhere to make what the world needs now. The wide portfolio of products across industries developed with Carbon solutions spans across many industries and areas of study. Carbon’s success in recruiting early career talent is because of its ability to pull people from such diverse fields of study and background, which is a key driver of innovation within the company. Carbon promotes a hybrid working environment, work-life balance, and opportunities for growth. During recruitment, candidates are given a best-in-class interview experience with access to meet with a diverse set of people and a virtual tour of the work environment. As Carbon has grown, the same philosophies have worked for the early career program.

Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Carbon’s success is deeply rooted in the diversity of its employees. Early career talent and interns are one area of focus to grow diversity within traditionally underrepresented areas. Carbon’s mentorship and development programs help grow early career talent to ensure representation at all levels. It is also important to have spaces for said talent to connect. Carbon’s employee-led ERGs bring together members of various communities and work to bring community awareness and a voice to the unique experiences of employees in those groups. Carbon hosts specific events focused on highlighting the experiences of BIPOC, women, and LGBTQIA+ employees. The University team partners with Carbon employee resource groups when building strategies every season and always welcomes feedback from employees and candidates for continuous improvement.

Impactful Internship Program

Interns at Carbon are embedded into Carbon’s culture from the start, including being assigned a supportive manager, a mentor from another department, and being added to an all-employee “Carbon Community” Google space. Throughout the internship, interns are provided a balanced agenda of educational opportunities, social events, and professional development that is centered around Carbon’s company values — Collaborative, Accountable, Integrity, Ambitious, and Innovative. Some examples include ‘fireside chat’ opportunities to connect with different executives at Carbon, an event dedicated to making fun personal prints in the lab, a group visit to a San Francisco Giants game, volunteer opportunities, and company-wide final presentations. Interns are encouraged to work on important projects, and many interns come out of their internships knowing that they made an impactful contribution to Carbon.

Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent

At Carbon, entry-level employees are provided access to learn about different aspects of Carbon through educational resources in an internal learning platform, Carbon Academy. As a company focused on hardware, software, manufacturing, and chemical engineering, Carbon emphasizes the importance of cross-collaboration within its very structure. Employees are also encouraged to sign up for regular company-sponsored workshops to understand career growth and professional development. Additionally, after one year of employment at Carbon, employees are encouraged to join a mentorship program where underrepresented and entry-level employees can receive professional development and support from external individuals with similar backgrounds. Lastly, all Carbon employees attend a company-wide meeting every Friday to learn from internal or external motivating and diverse speakers, receive up-to-date company and product updates, and get a sense of community and belonging in a hybrid environment.
