Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

Stellar candidate experience, from first on-campus event to eventual start date, is the crux of Brex’s successful university recruiting strategy. Brex enriches the candidate experience by looking at the candidate journey from beginning to end, and crafting a personalized experience stage-by-stage. Throughout the interview process, Brex intentionally allocates time for the candidates to chat with multiple engineers across the organization (exposure to different levels, teams, and backgrounds is critical). Doing so naturally creates opportunities for Brex’s culture to materialize. The interview process is designed to test practical skills and knowledge, which builds excitement for the type of projects engineers work on a daily basis. It is critical to note that candidate experience does not end after they sign the offer! Given that interns and new grads start months out from their sign date (sometimes up to one year), Brex continues to engage with the students by sending out bi-monthly newsletters to highlight products, culture and events at the company.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

In an effort to create a more diverse workplace and establish a strong brand presence within universities, Brex partners with underrepresented student organizations (specifically NSBE, SHPE, WiCS, and SWE) and schools that they can grow with for years to come. Additionally, Brex diligently attends conferences aiming to promote underrepresented demographics in tech – a majority of early talent hires were directly sourced from these events. It’s been proven that on-campus recruiting has been the most successful channel for university recruiting, and they will continue to build relationships with universities and student organizations, while continuing to engage in the most relevant conferences to attract budding talent.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

The goal of the internship program is to invest in the next generation of rising talent. Creating an engaging program, with the goal of converting high-performing interns to full-time employees, continues to be their north star. To accomplish this, the Brex internship program has developed strong partnerships with leaders and mentors across the engineering organization. By bringing in both seasoned leaders and budding ICs,  they have built a challenging, yet supportive learning environment. Their interns are given an opportunity to work on projects from inception to launch, while keeping stretch goals in mind if they are making fast progress on the initial scope. Every project focuses on solving a key business problem where cross-functional collaboration is an absolute must. Moreover, Brex pairs each intern with a manager and a mentor, who are responsible for onboarding, progress tracking, feedback, and mentorship.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

Brex has launched the Early Career Engineering Pod for entry-level talent (Interns, New grads, Associate Software Engineers). They have invested in upleveling junior engineers by providing them with a safe forum to discuss issues, ideas, and improvements. This pod also acts as a platform for senior engineers and leaders to provide tactical short-term and long-term career advice, and most importantly, foster a sense of belonging in an evolving company. Brex's ultimate goal is to support and accelerate the development of early career engineers so that they can eventually grow into well-rounded leaders.
