Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

With yet another year of virtual recruiting, Box’s early career team ensured every event and interaction was all about bringing value to students. The team not only partnered with a ton of different student groups, as well as schools all over the nation, but they also opened up events to anyone and everyone who was interested in learning and growing themselves. They hosted events all about building soft skills and how to “stand out in a virtual environment”, as well as panel discussions about what it means to start your career in tech and having support and mentorship. Beyond events, the team also invested their time in connecting students with their employee resource communities and encouraging the whole business to get involved – needless to say it was a success!

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

The Early Career Recruiting and Programming team at Box strives for a thoughtful, informative, and positive candidate experience for all. It all starts with employment branding and hosting virtual events all about adding and bringing value to students. From there, the team is with candidates every step of the way, constantly sending updates as well as more information on each stage of the interview process, to truly set the candidates up for success and be their advocates. In the end, the team ensures candidates have all the information they need to make a confident decision in (hopefully) joining the Box family!

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging is at the heart of Box’s recruiting and programming for early career talent. They have company-wide initiatives for a “diverse tech pipeline” and it all begins with employment branding. The team partners with HBCUs and HSIs, as well as student groups, to spread the word about opportunities with Box. They also host the Box Business Fellowship each year, bringing in students from underrepresented groups within Tech to come learn all about the business side of how a tech company operates. Each year the team hires these fellows either as interns or new grads throughout the business. This year, the team also introduced their first ever apprenticeship program to bring in people who have not attended a college or university to learn and grow as engineers within the company. These apprentices, as well as all interns and new grads, are treated like full time Boxers and encouraged to truly make an impact in the company.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

Interns at Box praise the program for how inclusive and fun it is. Each and every intern is empowered to own and drive their projects, creating something truly impactful for the company and each of their teams. They also get the opportunity to meet all of the interns and grow alongside each other throughout the summer. Some of the top intern activities include a boba making workshop with a local bubble tea company, an AMA and luncheon with the CEO, a skills-building session on “how to build your own personal brand”, and even a virtual magic show! Over 90% of the interns then return back full time to continue to learn, grow, and hone their skills as full time Boxers!

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

Box is a great place to start out your career because of the amount of mentorship and ownership you can have. The teams have built out a thoughtful onboarding process, and encourages all new hires from day one to get involved in the business. Whether you want to join an Employee Resource Community or take “volunteer time off” to give back to the community, Box cares about the full employee experience and is all about bringing your whole self to work. It’s easy to get involved in one of the many Mentorship or Peer Coaching Programs through their Talent and Belonging teams or through the Young Professional Network (YPN). Especially for people early in their careers, Box ensures you get the mentorship, guidance, and support you need (as well as tons of great swag!)
