Black & Veatch is passionate about investing in early career talent because students will be helping address some of the world's most pressing infrastructure challenges. As one of the newest employee-owners at Black & Veatch, they won't just be doing the busy-work. The next generation of talent will learn the business from a diverse, motivated team of designers, engineers, and project managers. Through this early talent that the College Relations team strives to find, students will work in a variety of disciplines and functional areas, as well as develop and sharpen the skills that will serve them throughout their career.

Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment

The College Relations team at Black & Veatch strives to recruit students in a variety of ways, with the team attending over 40 career fairs through the US, including 5 at HBCU schools (mostly in-person), as well as the SHPE national convention. These interactions have led Black & Veatch to have conversations about intern and full-time opportunities with over 2,400 students just this fall. Black & Veatch is also making its presence known in the classroom, as well with 16 Career Conversations with student organizations at universities to talk directly to groups of students about ‘Building a World of Difference’. No matter which positions Black & Veatch is interviewing for, the company looks for candidates who value diverse opinions, who are comfortable learning on the fly, who work well in a collaborative environment, and who hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Black & Veatch’s College Relations team is focused on creating and sustaining a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment — which begins with a pledge to view and treat each other as equal. Black & Veatch knows that a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse workplace is an incubator for innovative thinking. The College Relations team has worked diligently to strengthen and enhance its relationships with more HBCU schools, as well as organizations like SWE, NSBE, and SHPE. Black & Veatch also offers 9 ERGs that currently consist of more than 2,000 members. Its ERGs assemble people with similar backgrounds and stories to promote cultural awareness and engagement, provide mentoring and social opportunities, and help employees find the best way they can contribute to the company’s strategy and mission.

Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent

Black & Veatch invests in the retention and success of entry-level hires by proactively creating a great culture to work in. It starts with a streamlined onboarding function, which includes a newly added culture immersion program to tell the story of Black & Veatch. Trainings for supervisors include ways to communicate to professionals and understand what they need, and a focus to embrace inclusivity and emotional intelligence to make a comfortable and equitable place for new professionals to work. Black & Veatch’s ASPiRE principles, which are 20 behavioral principles that can be applied personally and professionally, truly describes how employees interact with one another. These principles are ingrained into everything Black & Veatch does, and are being used company-wide and modeled by leaders to emphasize the integrity and commitment to each other.
