The Highlights of Berkeley Research Group's Approach to Early Career Hiring
Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
BRG’s motto is “Intelligence that works,” and that is applied to all facets of the organization, including sourcing and recruiting. BRG has consistently focused on aiding new talent by providing skill building sessions and workshops to help building up their skillset. BRG also provides informational sessions and coffee chats throughout the year to give insight into their practices, the work they do, and to assist recent graduates in relationship building and networking. Recently, BRG has extended these efforts to high schoolers via the BRG Leg Up Program – a new initiative that focuses on introducing high school students to the consulting industry; teaching them the basics of business, finance, and economics; and providing them with the foundations for their professional network. This program was successfully launched in the DC and NY offices in 2021 and is expanding to LA, Houston, Chicago, and Boston for Summer 2022.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
BRG’s recruiting team focuses on creating a comprehensive and robust hiring process for all candidates, especially for student job seekers who might be new to the corporate world. During the hiring process, BRG partners student candidates with a junior staff member from the initial interest call, interviews, and through to an offer. The junior staffer acts as a buddy who helps guide candidates through the hiring process while providing helpful tips and insight along the way. Recruiters also perform daily check ins with candidates during the interview process to answer any questions and provide valuable feedback. During the process, candidates have direct access to their buddy and a recruiter via phone and email. BRG follows up with all candidates to collect feedback on how to better improve the recruiting and hiring process.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
BRG is relatively new on their diversity, equity, and inclusion journey, but has truly hit the ground running. To recruit diverse talent, BRG's multipronged approach includes partnering with Appcelerator, an online mentorship program dedicated to placing underrepresented talent in full-time positions and engaging in DEI-focused programming. In 2021, BRG hosted a consulting workshop at Howard University, attended conferences and career fairs with the National Association of Health Services Executives and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and established eleven employee resource groups (ERGs) dedicated to providing open forums for employees who share a common identity to meet and support each other by building a community and a sense of belonging.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
BRG strives to make sure that interns receive a high-quality experience that speaks to the industry the students will be working in. BRG provides interns with substantive case work in a variety of practices so that they can get a feel for BRG’s various communities. Interns also can take advantage of a weekly technical series to help build skills in R, SQL, Excel, and more. But it isn’t all work and no play. BRG provides interns with opportunities to connect with a robust expert network and team building experiences that help them build connections with established professionals and each other.
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
BRG prides itself on being a great place for recent graduates. In addition to offering a competitive compensation and benefits package, BRG ensures that new hires are given the materials needed to succeed. Fall associates go through a multi-day onboarding that includes trainings, off-sites, and introductions with everyone they need to know. BRG invites junior staff to explore the various practices run by more than ninety managing directors in over twenty-five offices, including valuation, healthcare analytics, restructuring, economics and damages, performance improvement, and more. Once onboarded, new hires can participate in the Mentorship Program, ERGs, or various skills trainings. Junior staff also have the benefit of being able to reimburse certain professional certification.
