The Highlights of BD's Approach to Early Career Hiring
Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
As a pioneer in cutting-edge healthcare technology, BD is no stranger to combating global health challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. With virtual recruitment remaining a key component in early talent recruitment strategy, the Early Talent team has embraced a hybrid approach to ensure all students feel welcome in the recruitment process. This past recruitment season, the BD team was fortunate enough to safely attend in-person events at colleges and universities, strengthen partnerships with national organizations such as the National Sales Network and SWE by attending both virtual and in-person conference events, and reach more students than ever before through public info sessions. Their leadership development programs have been able to get involved as well, with some of the programs hosting virtual externship opportunities for students interested in exploring future careers with BD. Lastly, BD launched their Campus Advancers ambassador program this year to place the student experience at the forefront of their process.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
The BD Early Talent team is committed to advancing the world of health by recruiting and onboarding top early talent from colleges and universities across the United States. Their multifaceted approach to recruitment creates an environment for students to feel fully prepared – and excited – to accept their offers. BD has longstanding relationships with dozens of universities as well as national affinity-based organizations such as Out4Undergrad to ensure our process is inclusive, diverse, & equitable. Furthermore, their interview process directly involves leaders within their business to highlight BD's outstanding culture, allows for candidates to meet numerous associates and team members in a streamlined series of interviews, and encourages students to showcase their talents through thought-provoking interview questions and case studies. Since the bulk of their recruitment takes place in the fall, students that accept offers can stay connected to BD through frequent touchpoints with hiring managers, onboarding buddies, and the Early Talent team.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
Inclusion, diversity, and equity are not simply buzzwords at BD – they’re a way of life. To ensure that their patients can live healthily, BD's workforce must reflect the global population they serve. Early Talent is a key contributor in enacting this mission. As previously mentioned, their wide-ranging university and national partnerships allow BD to support underrepresented talent not just by showing up at a career fair, but by offering meaningful professional development such as resume reviews, interview preparation, and personal brand-building. The 14+ Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) are vested partners in growing, developing, and mentoring early talent by staffing said professional development opportunities as well as hosting their own mentorship programs. Early Talent hires, including interns, are encouraged to get involved with the Associate Resource Groups upon start.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
BD recognizes the importance of internships in students’ career and educational journeys. To support early talent hires in becoming future leaders, interns are paired with both a hiring manager and mentor. Under the guidance of said hiring manager and mentor, students make lasting impact at BD by completing projects with immediate business needs. Often, the work contributed by interns continues after their departure because of the influence students have in driving projects forward. In addition to weekly events such as the Executive Speaker Series and Leadership Case Studies, students get to see firsthand BD's lifechanging products by visiting manufacturing sites and global distribution centers. In their commitment to centering the student experience, the Early Talent team innovates new events each year by implementing previous interns’ feedback.
Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent
BD is proud to offer over ten official Leadership Development Programs (LDP) across various functions such as engineering, manufacturing, finance, IT, supply chain and more! Each program features diverse rotations, combined with executive coaching and development, that enable early career hires to build new skills and explore multiple career paths. These unique programs and a built-in network provide visibility and preparation for future leadership opportunities. Rotations take students across the United States, and in some cases, globally, to give LDP Associates visibility and access to all of the talent and resources the organization has to offer. LDP Associates work together across the different programs through networking events and summits. Cohorts are comprised of top-performing former interns and exceptional external hires.
