Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

Atlassian hosts virtual events open to students from all universities. The team participates in career expos like GHC & Tapia to source diverse talent. Email campaigns are sent to candidates, giving early access to positions and updates about Atlassian's program, including 3x/year newsletters. Candidates utilize a workshop hub during interviews, containing a collection of pre-recorded events & talks helping students prepare for interviews & showcase what being a member of the team is like. The offer process includes chats with prior members of the program and videos explaining offer details. The team implemented Passport, investing in entry-level hires as brand ambassadors for the program.

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

At application submission, the students are contacted by a recruiter who is dedicated to walking them through the interview process. Timely, informative communication and working with offer deadlines are top priorities for the recruiter. During the process, Atlassian invites candidates to a workshop hub that contains a collection of pre-recorded events and talks that will help both prepare them for interviews, as well as show them what being a member of the team is all about! Along with the workshop hub, candidates also receive extensive preparation material (videos, PDFs, advice) to help them feel confident and informed during the interview and offer process.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

In order to recruit & retain diverse talent at the entry-level, Atlassian participates in and heavily sources from diversity-focused conferences like GHC, Tapia, AfroTech, O4U, etc. Candidates met through these conferences, along with sourced underrepresented candidates, are included in their Early Applicant outreaches. These email campaigns include the opportunity to apply to Atlassian's jobs before they are available on our website. The team also employs an Early ID strategy that helps to identify top potential candidates for the future recruiting season. These Early ID candidates are included in nurture email campaigns as well as newsletter emails. The team also partners with Code2College.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

Once the internship starts, the program is focused on student development as well as assessing the interns' future potential. To ensure the success of the intern program, each intern is assigned meaningful and interesting work that allows them to stretch themselves and demonstrate learning agility. Guidance from management and a designated mentor and buddy is implemented, with a high focus on student learning. An Atlassian internship means tackling real problems that are critical to the functioning of the business. From Day 1, interns become core members of the teams and contribute day-to-day just like any other full-time Atlassian.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

Atlassian is a great place for new graduates to begin their careers for so many reasons! In their first month, all graduates spend two weeks going through Atlassian's Chapter One program, which is a grad-specific onboarding built just for them. This program provides them the opportunity to connect and collaborate with their peers, dive into training, and enjoy some “playing, as a team,” along the way. Grads are given the opportunity to work on projects that have direct impact on company OKRs. All new graduates are provided 1-on-1 mentorship as well as a 30-60-90 day plan designed to introduce them to everything related to Atlassian and their role.
