Demonstrated Investment in Early Career Hiring

Asurion understands that young professionals provide fresh perspectives and diversity in the workplace, while also reducing blind spots and top-heavy work structures. The Asurion intern class of 2022 represented 37 universities and was the most diverse class to date. Interns participate in diversity and inclusion round tables, internship design sprints, and share honest and direct feedback with executive leadership. Asurion’s internship teaches young professionals how to excel in a corporate role and be successful leaders in their job and community. Interns complete on-the-job training and soft skill workshops, including executive presentation skills, giving and receiving feedback, and communicating clearly.

Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruitment

The Early Career team at Asurion supports candidates from beginning to end of the interview process. Candidates are offered an open house Q&A session, interview tips and tricks guide, and a chance to speak with intern alum prior to their final interview. Offers are extended via phone call from an Early Careers team member. Asurion’s Early Careers team is supported by Asurion’s ambassadorship team, “The A-Team,” throughout the recruiting season. A-Team members represent Asurion at campus events and make the Asurion candidate experience one of a kind. The Asurion Early Careers teams implemented a cohort hiring model for their class of 2023 interns. To ensure interns join a team they are passionate about, they speak with a variety of hiring managers and rank team preferences before being officially matched with a team.

Overarching Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Asurion created nontraditional internship opportunities for military veterans and high school seniors, and provides them with on-the-job training to acquire skills needed to succeed in a corporate environment. Asurion also funds STEM scholarships at Fisk University and Middle Tennessee State University to strengthen diverse talent pipelines in Middle Tennessee and provide students with real-world exposure and experience. Asurion also expanded access to its internship and apprenticeship programs to front-line employees. These award-winning programs account for 58% of the growth in Black/LatinX talent in entry-level roles in Asurion’s Product organization from 2019-2022.

Impactful Internship Program

From day one, interns are immersed into Asurion’s award-winning culture with a week-long orientation including C-suite speakers, networking happy hours, soft skill trainings, and a Nashville food tour. Interns are assigned impactful projects, and software engineer interns see code go live in as little as a week. Interns present projects to VP leaders at the end of the summer. Cross-functional intern teams develop a product or service they think Asurion should implement, and teams present Shark Tank-style pitches to executive leaders and win lunch with the CIO. Asurion interns celebrated National Intern Day by volunteering in the Nashville community and competing in a Field Day. Other summer events included an ice cream social, baseball game, and ping pong tournament. Interns receive mentorship via ERG buddies, team mentors, Executive Leadership Q&As, Alumni Mentor Circles, and Employee-hosted Career Connections series.

Growth and Development of the Next Generation of Talent

Since 2019, 63 interns have transitioned from Asurion interns to full-time employees — and 95% of them are still at Asurion. The average promotion rate nationally is three years, but Asurion alumni are typically promoted within 1.5 years. Asurion’s Early Careers team regularly surveys interns to understand program opportunities to implement new features. Surveys indicate that early career hires are more likely to stay if offered mentorship, mental health benefits, flexibility, and comprehensive onboarding. Interns are assigned to an alumni mentorship circle, ERG Buddy, manager, and a team mentor. Interns participate in Wellness Week, which includes meditation sessions, financial literacy courses, and workouts. They are also provided PTO throughout the summer. Computer monitors are provided so interns can comfortably work from home, and the program starts with a one-week onboarding with the goal to sell the interns on Asurion and Nashville.
