Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting
The university recruiting team has been able to leverage several different methods of sourcing and recruiting over the last year and half that has given Amtrak the ability to hire some great students and early career talent. The team is currently recruiting/sourcing via in-person and virtual events that are being held at many of of 20 plus schools that Amtrak partners with across the country. The team felt the need to enhance their technology as well so UR purchased Handshake to be able to capture and reach a greater number of students and host more workshops(resume builder, mock interviews) throughout the months. Recently, the UR team developed a campus ambassador program that kicked off in January 2022.
Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience
The university recruitment team at Amtrak goes above and beyond to ensure that every candidate is getting the white glove approach throughout the recruitment cycle. The UR team prepares the candidate with expectations of the process during the initial phone screen and candidates are aware from the beginning about how the experience will flow. Amtrak's UR team coordinator will also prep the candidate for interviews and make sure all candidates are provided with interview tips and useful information that they can utilize during the panel interview, by doing this it allows all candidates to stand out and keeps the interview very engaging.
Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion
The university recruitment team at Amtrak works diligently everyday to make sure the campus program and rotational programs are inclusive. The UR team works with hiring managers to ensure the interview panels are diverse and that the candidate slate is also diverse. Amtrak has been able to increase their HBCUs and HSIs presence and recruiters are currently partnering with many of the student organizations at the selected schools to increase awareness surrounding open opportunities. Amtrak also offers scholarships for underrepresented students that are from diverse backgrounds that are pursuing STEM majors.
Investing in Impactful Internship Programs
At Amtrak, interns are given the chance to excel, collaborate and work on projects that will make an impact in the community. The intern community at Amtrak is very inclusive and purpose driven. In the internship program interns will get the opportunity to participate in hackathons, lunch and learns, monthly executive leadership talks and peer to peer social networking events. The internship will also allow interns to experience rail travel throughout the country for free or at a reduced cost. At Amtrak interns are hired 3 times per year which opens up opportunities to transition into additional terms and departments or convert into full time hires.
