The Highlights of Affirm's Approach to Early Career Hiring

Building an Innovative and Multi-Faceted Approach to University Recruiting

In this second year of virtual recruiting, Affirm wanted to ensure their strategy created an equitable approach to sourcing and recruiting so that schools were not left out. They partnered with various organizations that would help the company reach thousands of schools. With these partnerships, Affirm hosted a variety of events that allowed students to get to know the company better from its mission and values, to the impact students could make as an intern or new grad to the perks and benefits included. One specific event that stood out was The Science Behind Money event that gave students a closer look into life at Affirm. A few Affirmers volunteered to discuss money mistakes they’ve made past, lessons they’ve learned along the way, and the impact Affirm’s teams (engineering and business) are making on the finance industry (keeping these lessons in mind).

Crafting a Standout Candidate Experience

With one of their core company values being People Come First, the University Recruiting Team at Affirm strives to provide the same value to candidates. To start, a recruiter will schedule personalized calls and check in regularly with students to answer questions and outline the interview process and next steps with them. Based on the calls, Affirm matches students with Hiring Managers of teams they’re interested in. After the interview process, there is dedicated time with the recruiter to discuss offer details, as well as optional additional calls to learn more about the prospective team and meet potential teammates.Affirm is always interested in hearing how they can improve the candidate experience and give candidates the chance to share their feedback in an anonymous survey.

Moving the Needle on Diversity & Inclusion

Affirm works to expand fair and transparent access to credit and to welcome every kind of person and idea. That’s why they are passionate about connecting with talent across the country. Some examples of how Affirm achieves this are: (1) Affirm partners with various organizations that focus on connecting companies to a diverse slate of candidates. (2) Interns and new grads are able to join Affirm’s employee resource groups, community groups, mentorship programs, and learning and development courses upon joining the company. (3) Affirm launches periodic surveys that promote feedback on how the company can improve. Executives read all feedback and implement a lot of changes (Affirm’s No Meeting Wednesdays came out of a survey). (4) Affirm’s DEI team launched Suggestion Ox, an anonymous, 2-way DEI feedback platform.

Investing in Impactful Internship Programs

On top of the usual mentorship from their Hiring Manager, Mentor, and team, interns have the option to join any of Affirm’s employee resource groups and community groups to continue building their mentorship and network. Similar to Affirm’s full-time employees, interns have access to many benefits (i.e. TWIC wallets, health insurance, etc.). In addition, interns are treated as full-fledged members of their team and get to work on projects that actually get deployed. Their variety of events provide interns with an opportunity to get to know each other, past interns who are now full-time employees, hiring managers, and executives on a more personal level.

Supporting the Growth and Development of Entry-Level Talent

For new grads who want to make an impact and grow, Affirm is a great place to begin their career. While learning the ins and outs of Affirm through the onboarding courses, new grads also go through onboarding courses specific to their roles. They have regular check-ins with their manager, an onboarding buddy, a mentor on the team, and other teammates. New grads work on projects that directly impact the business, merchants, and consumers. With a value of No Fine Print, Affirm employees are able to clearly see what is expected of them in their role and how to advance to the next level. Affirm’s live and online learning & development courses and mentorship programs also contribute to being able to really build their career.
